Story
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The actions of Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the film’s conclave are faithful to the Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican makes an official announcement that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal residence is sealed with a purple ribbon and sealed with a wax papal seal. The college of cardinals is housed in apartments (Domus Sanctae Marthae, or Saint Martha’s House) where they eat and sleep between votes.

full of political battles, twists, and surprises. Directed by Edward Berger (ALL SILENCE IN THE WEST FRONT), CONCLAVE moves forward with gusto, unraveling a mystery – not a « whodunnit »; but a « who gets it » – and becomes surprisingly tense. This is partly due to the fine actors who are cast in this film. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) anchors the action as « Dean » the cardinals, tasked with leading a disparate group of cardinals to a consensus selection of the next pope. He acts as detective and facilitator as he grapples with his own faith…
but who really, really wants it
and ambition… while uncovering the schemes and plots of some « humble servants » competing for the top job. Capable assistants include John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and a handful of others (mostly unknown) vying for the « pole position. » in the race to be the next Pope. Special mention to the GREAT Stanley Tucci who supported him as one of the contenders whose platform seems to be « I don’t want this ». Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) are mentioned during the Oscar nomination period (they are very good, and that’s it).
You be the judge
It’s fun with these twists, but if I’m being honest, I felt like this movie was « one twist too far » and should have/could have ended 10 minutes before the end (without the final twist). Well, some would say that this final twist is the point of the movie, but… I would have been fine without it being the point. and join other « adults » in the cinema. Letter grade: A-8 stars (out of 10)
